Meet the ISCycle Team
Dr James Green
James currently leads ISCycle as Principal Investigator. He is a Chartered Health Psychologist and Associate Professor with the School of Allied Health, and a core member of the Physical Activity for Health Research Centre, Health Research Institute, at the University of Limerick. James has broad, interdisciplinary interests, including how habits may underpin maintenance of behaviour, and work either for or against behaviour change. Many of his previous projects have been culturally-located: research with ethnic minorities or in low and middle income countries.
Dr Yvonne Ryan-Fogarty
Yvonne is an environmental scientist and work package lead for environmental outcomes of ISCycle. She is an Associate Professor in Chemical Sciences at University of Limerick. Her research focusses on developing a safe circular economy through application of industrial ecology principles. In short she worries about rebound effects! Growing up she cycled to school and friends’ homes independently and wanted the same for her family. She spent some time working for An Taisce and the Green School/Campus programmes where she trained as a Bikeability Instructor. Moving from independent cycling to family cycling prompted her to buy an ebike. She is now a long tail ecargo bike enthusiast!
Dr Louise Foley
Louise has a background in health psychology and is currently working as Research Fellow on the ISCycle2 project at University of Limerick. Louise completed her PhD at University of Galway, studying medication taking among people living with multiple long-term conditions. Since 2022, Louise has been working with the ISCycle team on the ebike loan project. She is interested in working together with members of the public to generate evidence to inform more equitable and inclusive policies. At ISCycle this involves collaborating with community partners to develop and evaluate a sustainable mobility intervention for people who cannot access the Bike-to-Work scheme for a variety of reasons, but who nonetheless should be included in the transition to sustainable mobility.
Dr Anna Barrero
Anna is a Sport Scientist and Postdoctoral Researcher on the ISCycle project at the University of Limerick. With a background in sports physiology, she completed her PhD between the University of Barcelona and Indiana University, studying triathletes' performance and muscle damage in ultra-endurance events. She’s recently worked with cystic fibrosis patients at the University of Limoges to explore their physical activity and barriers to exercise. Previously, at the University of Rennes 2, she investigated cardiac fatigue in cycling events like the Tour de France. She even rode the Tour herself for two years to promote women’s cycling and equality in the sport. She has taken countless bikepacking trips around the world, enjoying the freedom of traveling on her own terms. For her, bikepacking strikes the perfect balance: it’s fast enough to cover a lot of ground each day, yet slow enough to fully appreciate and connect with the scenery along the way, all while leaving no carbon footprint.
Shauna O'Mahony
Shauna recently completed her BSc in Psychology at the University of Limerick and is currently studying for a Masters in Clinical Psychology. Shauna is a Research Assistant on the ISCycle2 project, working on a scoping review about cycling among people experiencing socio-economic disadvantage. Her areas of interest include developmental psychology, trauma & social inequality, and she is passionate about research that helps us to better understand the experiences of marginalized people in society.
Professor Colin Fitzpatrick
Colin is the Head of Department and Professor in the Department of Electronic & Computer Engineering at University of Limerick. He teaches Sustainable Life Cycle Engineering, Electronics & the Environment, and Energy Management. His research interests cover a range of topics in the area of technology and sustainability including the Circular Economy, Electronics Repair & Reuse, WEEE Management, Electricity Demand Management, Conflict Minerals, Planned Obsolescence, & Environmental Sensing and he has published widely in these areas.
Professor Catherine Woods
Catherine is Professor of Physical Activity for Health in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences at the University of Limerick and a member of UL’s Health Research Institute. Catherine lead's the HRI's Physical Activity for Health Research Centre, a multi-disciplinary group of core and associate members. Catherine's research cuts across the themes of lifestyle, health and technology. She enjoys developing and testing theoretically sound interventions to change population levels of physical activity, and seeks better, more systematic methods of bringing research, practice and policy closer together to achieve real and sustainable impact. She believes that physical activity is a best buy for public health as it has the potential to improve health and wellbeing for everyone, irrespective of age, ability or condition.
Professor Katie Robinson
Katie is Professor of Occupational Therapy and lead of the Ageing Research Centre at University of Limerick. Katie qualified with a BSc Occupational Therapy from Trinity College Dublin in 2000, and holds an MSc in Disability Management from UCD and a PhD in Occupational Therapy from the University of Limerick. Katie is interested in ageing research, rehabilitation intervention development and qualitative methods. Katie has been deeply involved in establishing a Public and Patient Involvement stakeholder panel of older adults at the University of Limerick, and is interested in measuring what matters to older adults in intervention research.
